Humane AI recently released a demo video of its AI Pin, which is expected to launch for US customers on November 16, 2023, and is likely to follow for global customers starting next year for $699 (INR 58,000).
The device bears a striking resemblance to the Star Trek badge used for communication. It has no screen and users can interact with it using voice, touchpad, gestures or holding objects in front of it to grab. It also has a laser projector that displays text on your hand.
“We were able to pack a lot of technology into something very small. Artificial intelligence can create an experience that almost takes a backseat to the computer,”
Chaudhari said in an introductory video.
The $24 monthly subscription includes a separate phone number and works independently without a phone, paving the way for so-called ambient computing.
“AI Pin is the embodiment of our vision to integrate artificial intelligence into everyday life, enhancing our capabilities without overshadowing our humanity,”
the founders said at the launch.
Founded in 2018 by former Apple employees and innovators Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, Humane aims to remove barriers to communication and endless engagement.
Chaudhri has spent more than 20 ydemoears building the Mac, iPod, iPad, Apple Watch and iPhone and holds more than a thousand patents. Bongiorno led Teams during his eight-year tenure as director of software engineering at Apple.
Change is coming…
Many believe that the Humane AI Pin would soon make smartphones redundant. “This blows my mind. Just the kind of portable that would get me off many phones for a while. It’s a game changer,” said one YouTuber who goes by the name docmantis9863. Former employees of the company that made the iPhone said the goal was to restore iPhone functionality without the addictive elements, such as the dopamine effect of refreshing a Facebook feed or swiping to watch TikTok videos. Ken Kocienda, head of product design at Humane, said, “It’s more of an attraction than pushing content like the iPhone.
The Humane AI Pin is a device equipped with a camera, motion sensors, depth sensors and a microphone that allows you to record the environment and respond to voice commands. It also has a “personal speaker” and supports Bluetooth headphones.
It lacks a traditional screen and makes up for it with a flashy projector
green content in the hands of the user as shown in the video release. The device includes a mobile touchpad and requires physical activation of the voice assistant with a button. The Cosmos operating system focuses on security, smart technology and a user-friendly interface.
The unique two-piece design offers three color options and wireless and magnetic attachment options. “Powered by the Snapdragon processor and Qualcomm AI Engine, the AI pin provides fast and reliable performance for AI interactions,” explained Chaudhari.
Bongiorno emphasized in the demo video that privacy is a priority. The device turns on only when the user requests it via voice or touch commands. The Trust Light will blink while audio or video is being recorded and the recorded content will be available on Humane.center. Bongiorno explained that “if the device is physically tampered with, the AI Pin will be disabled and only Humane can reset it.”
First impression of AI Pin
Naomi Campbell spotted the brooch-like device on the ramp at Paris Fashion Week late last month. A clever marketing campaign generated interest in the device, but “What does it really do?” is a question that users ask on social networks.
On the Internet, users of this new technology reacted differently. Some were impressed by the new approach of the device and its integration with several artificial intelligence tools. Some were unimpressed, and X users were quick to point out various pin errors in the demo video. Gary Marcus asked the question: “Besides the many valid use cases, one key question is how reliable is the underlying AI.” Hallucinations have been a constant problem with AI and occur in every device it uses.
Comparing it to the performance of current smartphones seems a bit unfair as this is only the first iteration of the product. Human AI will see more versions of its device after they received a large investment from Sam Altman of Microsoft and received $ 230 million in four rounds of funding.
Altman said in an interview that the first AI device does not guarantee success. “It depends on the customers. Maybe the bridge is too far or people like it more than their phones,” he said.
